The Directorate for Regional Affairs (DIREG) has competence over and coordinates the participation of Argentina in the following regional fora:
- Summit of the Americas
- Ibero-American Conference
- Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC)
- Dialogue between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the European Union (CELAC-EU)
In the coordination of these fora for political dialogue and consensus-building at the regional, bi-regional and hemispheric levels, actions are based on the following values and principles: Peace; democracy; universalism; unrestricted respect for human and universal rights; freedom; gender and equality; social inclusion and equity; decent work; the rule of international law; nonbelligerence; respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity; the peaceful resolution of disputes; integration and cooperation.
In addition, actions are based on the conviction that it is necessary to build a new regional order which takes into account the transformations of the globalized world, based on the essential role of the State, with a focus on countries participating in the global process, regional integration, the promotion of the region as a Peace zone, and sustainable development with social inclusion and productive investments. Along these lines, active participation is maintained in regional and international fora that promote actions and develop mechanisms for more effective international cooperation.
Multilateral diplomacy allows countries to generate critical mass in favour of positions that support and increase their leverage in international negotiations, which is why it is an efficient foreign policy tool for the defence of national interests.
Firm and sustained regional support has been obtained from the Ibero-American Conference and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), in favour of the defence of the sovereignty claim over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands, as well as the surrounding maritime areas. The adoption of clauses for the defence of the constitutional order, democracy, and the rule of law has also been promoted.
There is a world trend in favour of regional and multilateral systems, to the extent that they serve as a common ground for international players, based on general and specific agreements. Therefore, based on the multiple existing regional summits, which gather participants around similar goals, the importance has been highlighted of building synergies within each forum, on the basis of the mandates agreed upon at previous summits and related to the issues to be dealt with in the following summits, simultaneously taking into account both the treatment and input received from other regional and sub-regional fora in connection with the subject at issue.
