Faurie visits Russia to advance bilateral agenda

Today, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie met in Moscow with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in the context of his visit to Russia to work on various aspects of the bilateral agenda and to make progress on the commitments undertaken within the framework of the strategic partnership between both nations.

Minister Faurie highlighted that the meeting is "a great opportunity to review bilateral relations and share some views on the international situation".

"Argentina has long held ties with Russia, one of the main actors in the international arena and a great economic partner of our country," he stated.

At the meeting, both Ministers discussed the possibility of expanding trade between Argentina and Russia, especially as regards the entry of larger amounts of Argentine meat, not only beef but also poultry and pork, into the Russian market. In addition, the Ministers addressed the state of Russian investment in Argentina and the need to boost investment in the future, particularly in the renewable and conventional energy sectors. The meeting also addressed the progress to be made on common projects in the scientific, technological and biotechnological fields.

In this regard, Argentina will send a business mission to Russia next February. The Ministers also addressed the possibility of a visit by Argentine President Mauricio Macri in 2018.

The Russian Foreign Minister highlighted that  "Argentina and Russia are old partners, our countries have maintained diplomatic relations for over 130 years. We always cooperate closely in the international arena and we have a rich bilateral agenda". In addition, he was confident that negotiations will remain "constructive and important". 

On the occasion, both Foreign Ministers expressed their commitment towards enhanced cooperation in multilateral organizations and fora. The meeting also addressed the importance of the 11th WTO Ministerial Conference to be held next December in Buenos Aires, as well as of Argentina's G20 Presidency in 2018.
